Half His Age by Jennette McCurdy

It has happened. Something I’ve seen people talk of in their online reviews but never thought it would be a personal experience of mine.

I picked up a book, could not put it down, and in a matter of hours I was able to mark it read on my Goodreads.

I’ve finished short stories in one sitting before, yes, but flying through a full-length 273 page novel like that? Never has happened.

That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The first line had me hooked and the story kept me engaged throughout. The cover caught my eye in Barnes and Noble, and when I read the synopsis, I immediately told my husband I had to read this. I’ve always been intrigued by the student/teacher trope — controversial, yes, but when done well, it can be entertaining, sexy, and messy in all the best ways.

The story centers around Waldo, a seventeen-year-old girl who is starting her senior year of high school. She immediately becomes fascinated, and progressively obsessed, with her creative writing teacher, Mr. Korgy. He’s married with a child and a hairy belly. I tried to picture Mr. Korgy in my mind; seeing what actor could fit the bill of attractively unattractive middle-aged man. I’m still trying.

A relationship develops and the reader is taken through the ups and downs of what it’s like to be a “mistress”. The highs of that time together, the lows of canceled plans, and the moments when the desperation has you doing things that are borderline psycho.

Overall, it was a fun read. 5 stars. Bold, uncomfortable (when you get to the period scene, you’ll know), addictive. I enjoyed the writing style, the story, and I wasn’t disappointed by the ending. Okay Jeanette! I see you. Bravo!
